Julian Silburn

Julian is a didjeridu healer, performer and teacher with a passionate interest in Aboriginal culture and music.

Julian has been taught by a number of Yolngu elders in Arnhemland and Noongar elders in Western Australia. Having collaborated with them musically and culturally over many years, he has their blessing and approval for using the didjeridu in his healing, performance and teaching work.

In all these activities, he aims to respectfully impart the spirit of what he was taught and to connect people with nature through various rhythms, songs and nature calls.

Brief Biography

1991 –Introduced to the didjeridu (Yidaki) by Derek Nannup, Perth WA.
1993– Met Maxine Fumugalli , a senior Aboriginal elder, who strongly encouraged Julian to use the didjeridu for healing purposes.
1996 -Travelled to the USA, Canada and Western Europe; taught students to play the didjeridu, gave didjeridu healing sessions and performed regularly in these countries.
1997 –Invited to the Northern Territory by the Aboriginal central desert artist, Joanne Nangala to make, demonstrate and teach the Didjeridu.
1997 –Invited to the East Arnhemland community of Yirkala where he was ‘adopted’ by two Aboriginal families having cultural lineage to Yidaki (Didjeridu) traditional techniques and rhythms which originated thousands of years ago.
1997 –Invited to travel to the South-West Arnhemland community of Beswick to learn with Yolngu ceremonial elder David Blanasi who taught him specific rhythms and songs that connect the player deeply with nature.
Julian Silburn1997 -Invited by Jason Cockatoo to teach Didjeridu in Darwin during NAIDOC week. 
1997-2005  Musical collaborations and sound healing with Jane Barnacle in Australia and Europe including street performance, teaching,festivals and recording of the Golden Age Cd which includes two soundtracks for two Billabong Surfing Films Taj Burrows ‘Montaj’ and Jack Mccoys ‘Blue Horizon’ 
1998 –Invited to play with the Je-be-weng Aboriginal group performers and a dancer of the Wathaurong people of Victoria.
1999 -Taught didjeridu in Western Europe and was invited in Switzerland to record a track on a didjeridu compilation album entitled ‘Yidaki 3’.
1999 –Recorded didjeridu for Billabong Films for ‘Montaj’ a surfing film featuring Taj Burrows.
1999 – Recorded didjeridu for another Billabong Film ‘Blue Horizon’ which was directed by Jack McCoys ‘and also featured award winning artists such as ‘Cold Play’, ‘Foo fighters’ and ‘Powderfinger’.
2000 – Invited to play with Billy Webb for the opening of the Wardan Aboriginal Cultural centre at Injidup, south west of Perth.
2001 -Played didjeridu with Nundjan Djiridjarkan (Ken Colbung), and the Aboriginal women’s choir, for the smoking ceremony at the opening of the Conscious Living Expo, Perth.
2005 -Invited to play didjeridu with Norm Stanley and the Pickett Brother’s dancing group at the Minnawarra Festival, Armadale, Western Australia.
2005 -Played didjeridu for Ken Colbung (Nundjan) at the Swan River (Derbal Yerrigan) funeral ceremony of the founder of the Annalakshmi Cultural Centre.
2006 -Recommended by Noongar Elder Willy Pickett to work at the Echoes Sound Healing Centre in Perth. Worked here from 2006 to 2010.
2006 –Performed with Willy Pickett’s sons at the Perth ‘Oz Concert” attended by over 5,000 people and screened on two T.V stations.
2006 – Performed didjeridu for Uncle Bob Randall, elder and traditional custodian of Uluru for the launch of the film ‘Kanyini.
2009 -Played didjeridu for a ‘Flower Pit’ healing ceremony supervised and guided by Ken Colbung in the Perth Hills.
2009 -2013 Co-founded ‘One Tribe’ a sound healing group in Fremantle which conducted regular sound healing sessions.
2011 – Invited to play didjeridu at the ‘Walking with Spirits Festival’ held at a sacred site near the Arnhemland community of Beswick.
2011 –Recorded didjeridu, songs and traditional stories with senior elder and Yolngu songman Muyngarnbi (Roy Ashley)
2012 –Invited to play for the opening of the Deepavali Festival and the Perth Temple of Fine Arts

2012-18 – Played didjeridu for weekly yoga sessions at the Fremantle Yoga Centre
2012 -18 – Provided group sound healing sessions Fridays and Sundays at the Fremantle Yoga Centre
2013- 16 Collaborated with Jawoyn Aboiriginal elder, Margaret Katherine in conducting the Transformational Tours Earth Treasure Vase Project in Arnhemland, Northern Territory.
2013-15 Played didjeridu at the ‘Flow from the heart’ yoga and sound events with Stuart Watkins and other musicians and yoga teachers, Cottesloe Civic Centre 2014 /2015 Sound healing with Charles Mathelot-(Sacred Sounds) at Sound temple in Sawyers Valley, WA.

2015 Performed with the Lotus Heart group at the Eartheart Event, Fremantle Town Hall
2014-15 Invited to provide sound healing sessions at Cable Beach Resort, Broome, WA.
2014 – Played didjeridu at the Wisdom of the Elders event, Mosman Park, WA.
2014 – Invited to play didjeridu for Nyoongar Elder Ben Taylor’s welcome to country for the Gyuto monks visit to Fremantle, WA.

2017 – Ceremonial Yidaki Playing for Earth Treasure Vase Placement, Bungle Bungles with Kimberley and Arnhemland elders.
2018-2022 Didjeridu teacher for Deadly Arts program through The Song Room
Teaching at several primary schools around Perth 
Invited to the 2018 Bali Spirit Festival to provide sound healing sessions over a week as part of the annual International Yoga/Music/Dance festival, Bali, Indonesia.Largest Yoga festival in Southern Hemisphere 
2018 – Invited to teach a 7 Week didjeridu course leading to a student performance for a NAIDOC assembly at Dianella High School, Perth, WA.
2018 – Invited by Dianella Primary School to teach 8 boys to play didjeridu with a local Nyoongar dancing group for performance to an audience of over 1,000.
2019-2023 Sound healing events with Sophie Lawrance at various locations and special events 
2020-2023 Didjeridu playing with Encoda 432 with Symphony Orchestra with Lead Artist Tenille Bentley and January Kultura plus a 15 piece symphony orchestra. 
Several performances and part of a 14 international award winning documentary now showing on SBS On Demand.
Upcoming touring in Sydney in 2023 and in UK in 2024.
